Hermit – a life on the margins

Hastings has its own legendary hermit, John Hancox, who lived in a cave in Ecclesbourne Glen for around fourteen years until his death in 1904. Sadly, homelessness is becoming an increasingly important issue in society, and now local community arts organisation, Radiator, has joined forces with the local wellbeing centre, Seaview, to produce a unique event based on John’s life. HOT reporter Cathy Simpson talked to Rebecca Child, who is leading the project along with Mary Hooper and Hilary Turner.

Irish Cinema Week

This week is Irish Cinema Week at Kino-Teatr and crime drama will play a large part in the season. Anyone trapped indoors all winter watching Nordic Noir on BBC4 should enjoy venturing out to catch some of their Irish – ‘Noirish’ if you will – counterparts on the big screen. Also in for a treat will be aficionados of that kind of music John Peel used to play – a.k.a. proper music – with an Irish twist. Added to that, the five-day season presents a couple of free screenings and ends with a couple of bona fide classics. Simon Charterton takes a look.

Ruff by Split Britches a Peggy Shaw solo performance

This week sees the re-opening of the Observer Building space, which less than two weeks ago left the splendid hands of Erika Holland and Dawn Dublin. A new collective has been formed and launches itself back into the community with the hope of maintaining the energy that was so much a part of this space.

Fewer trees, more visible ‘Bunker’

The Hastings Country Park controversies rumble loudly on. Some things don’t change (such as the ‘Bunker’ being impermissibly still there after all these years). Others do, including the range of grievances and the threatened increasing visibility of the ‘Bunker’. Bernard McGinley reports.

Campus survives but new sustainable model will be developed, says University of Brighton

Hastings campus is not sustainable in the longer term, the University of Brighton has concluded. It will now seek to develop a “new model” of higher education provision in the town, in conjunction with Sussex Coast College Hastings. But a withdrawal from the town, as local politicians had feared, is not envisaged. Nick Terdre reports.
