Starting this autumn, The Kim Stallwood Archive of research material documenting the history of the animal rights movement will become part of the British Library’s permanent holdings. The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and provides information services to academic, business, research and scientific communities.

What Marianne North learned from Edward Lear

In the autumn of 1852, Edward Lear, while painting a fig tree in the overgrown garden of the Hastings MP Frederick North, made a lifelong friendship with the MP’s daughters, which affects lives to this day. Artist and writer Maureen Connett tells us more about the lesser known artistic and musical talents of the writer, Edward Lear, best known for his limericks and nonsense poetry.

A walk to get Esther back on the road

This Saturday, 1 August, a small group of friends will be walking over 15 miles to raise money for a wheelchair for their friend Esther Fox. The walk will start at 10am from Eastbourne Pier and they hope to finish it around 4pm on Hastings Pier. HOT’s Erica Smith pulled on her hiking boots and caught up with the friends behind the fundraiser.

Octogenarian celebrates 20 years of caring

When Hastings resident Jackie Terry spotted an advert looking for people to give vulnerable teenagers a room, she could never have imagined where it would lead. Twenty years on, as she celebrates her 80th birthday, the mother-of-five says she “wouldn’t have missed it for the world”.

Award from the Nicaraguan Embassy
