Let’s Get Loud! Active Arts presents an evening of inclusive performance and creativity
Active Arts, Bexhill & Hastings Mencap’s flagship visual and performing arts programme for adults with learning disabilities, presents its annual showcase Let’s Get Loud! at the De La Warr Pavilion on Wednesday 2 July. Prepare for a truly unforgettable evening of talent, creativity and community spirit from over 60 performers, says deputy CEO Lianne Buttrey.
Let’s Get Loud! has become a much-anticipated highlight in the local arts calendar, known for its energy, inclusivity, and sheer entertainment value. This year’s compere is none other than German comedy ambassador to the UK, Henning Wehn!

This year’s production promises to raise the bar higher than ever, blending musical theatre, drama, comedy, film, and live signing and signing into one electrifying spectacle. Audiences can expect a dynamic mix of both original material and interpreted favourites—ranging from show-stopping numbers from Guys and Dolls to moving and lively renditions from Wicked, alongside laugh-out-loud comedy sketches and heartfelt moments that showcase each performer’s passion and unique voice.
Adding a fresh creative twist, this year’s event will also feature a series of original short films produced by the Active Arts Art and Design class. These individual visual pieces offer an insight into the thoughts, experiences, and imaginative worlds of the students, weaving personal storytelling into the wider performance.
The evening will also welcome an uplifting performance from Open Door’s (the charity’s weekday day service) Makaton Choir, using signed song to connect with audiences and demonstrate the power of accessible arts. Joining the celebration is Boathouse Theatre Arts, a fellow local group supporting learning-disabled performers, who bring their own creative flair and community connection to the stage.
As one student performer puts it, “This show is the highlight of my year!”—a sentiment that is echoed by many participants, staff and supporters alike.
Behind the scenes, every element of the show has been thoughtfully created to reflect the performers’ talents and ideas. Eye-catching costumes, colourful props, and striking backdrops have all been handmade by the Making for the Stage and Art and Design classes —Active Arts’ behind-the-scenes teams — who work throughout the year to bring the performance to life. Their work adds a bold visual layer to the show and highlights the group’s rich artistic talent beyond performance.

This year’s showcase holds special meaning for many involved. After two years of rehearsing in temporary venues, performers have returned to their creative home: the newly renovated Frimley Centre, the headquarters of Hastings and Bexhill Mencap—an independent local charity affiliated with the national Mencap Society.
Now fully accessible and purpose-designed, the Frimley Centre boasts bright, inclusive rehearsal spaces and dedicated visual arts studios. These have become hubs of creativity for both Active Arts students and Open Door’ service users.
This performance isn’t just a celebration of artistic talent—it’s a testament to what’s possible when people are given the right space, support, and belief in their abilities.
The transformation of the Frimley Centre marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. In addition to supporting the charity’s own projects, the building is now available for community hire, helping other local groups to benefit from the facilities.
A brand-new community café will also be opening its doors soon—offering an inclusive, welcoming space for everyone and creating meaningful new opportunities for connection, skill-building, and shared experiences.
The refurbishment has been made possible thanks to a combination of grant funding, public donations, and the charity’s own reserves—a reflection of the incredible support from the local community and beyond.
Let’s Get Loud! is more than just a show—it’s a joyful expression of ability, passion, and pride. Whether you’re a regular supporter or new to Active Arts, this event offers something for everyone: big laughs, unforgettable performances, and a glimpse into the remarkable creativity of learning-disabled artists.
Join us for an evening of inspiration and celebration—where everyone has a voice, and everyone is encouraged to get loud.
