Adventures in Pop, Hastings

Tuesday 1 July sees the band Florescent guesting at the Jenny Lind in Hastings Old Town.  Jude Montague talks to the band about their sound. Florescent is a four-piece alternative rock band known for blending elements of classic rock with modern alternative influences.

Interesting name. Why did you chose it?

‘Florescent’ came about after finding ourselves musically — the definition means ‘blossoming and bursting into flower’, which is powerful to us as metaphorically we are growing and evolving our sound every day.

Music in general is our escape and also gives us a reason to everyday create something. No matter what emotion we feel, we still want to pick up our instruments and write something that resonates. We believe music can resonate to so many people all over the world and also help improve mental health.

Our latest release be free is something that we hope people can relate to as we wanted to send the message about how everyone in life should never feel restricted to possibilities and to always follow their dreams and be free!

We admire the sounds of Sonic Youth, Wolf Alice, Nirvana and The Cardigans. We like to think that each one of these bands have helped us individually to create an original sound and discover our own unique elements.

We all love to be creative whether that’s within music or outside of music — we are all passionate about travelling, art, dancing and trying out new hobbies. We love to be spontaneous and live in the moment. Without these hobbies or other life activities it would be hard to even feel inspired to write or play — even something like taking a walk in nature is so necessary in our lives especially to feel inspired.

You come from the South East, from both Brighton and Hastings; what has it been like to develop as a band here?

Living in Brighton and Hastings have both been so versatile for the band as both the city and town have such a big creative scene and without this it really couldn’t give us the opportunity to get where we are now. Starting our new journey in Brighton is so exciting as it is all so new but we will never leave Hastings behind—the town is like one big creative family and we love it.

What’s next for the band after the Adventures in Pop, Hastings gig at the Jenny Lind?

The next steps for the band include releasing our next track moving differently where we will have a headline release show in Brighton at the Green Door Store on July 17th and can’t wait.

We are currently in the process of creating and recording brand new tracks as a band. We have only recently become a piece about four months ago and are so excited for the journey ahead.
