Ombudsman upholds Rocklands complaint

The local government ombudsman has upheld a complaint about Hastings Borough Council’s handling of developments in the Rocklands caravan park, but acknowledges that the council has taken action to improve its procedures. Meanwhile the Save Ecclesbourne Glen group has again resorted to the Information Commissioner to get a proper Rocklands’ site plan from the council. Nick Terdre reports.

Southern Rail or RMT – who cares?

Last month Sandra went to support the RMT strikers at Hastings station for the first time. As a wheelchair user, she’s very worried about the Driver-Only-Operated train policy, because she can foresee that if trains can be operated by the driver alone, the chances are that the role of the guard/conductor/second person on the train will be eroded in favour of profits. Here Sandra tells her heartwarming story for you in the face of adverse travel circumstances.

Affordable housing on Station Plaza scrapped

An application for removal of the affordable housing obligation in the Station Plaza development was approved with reluctance by the planning committee last week. The decision raises fears for the future of such housing in Hastings. Nick Terdre reports.

Candles lit for people of Aleppo

On Saturday (16 December) over 100 people attended a vigil for Aleppo the Stade Open Space. The event was organised by Hastings Supports Refugees to remember the victims of the terrible war in Syria and to send out a message that here in Hastings people are thinking of them. Jamie Osborn from Hastings Supports Refugees writes.

Call to tackle high rate of suicide

The high rate of suicide in the UK has been highlighted by the publication of a report by the Parliamentary Health Select Committee calling for a better government strategy for suicide prevention. Turning Point, a social enterprise which works with vulnerable people often at risk of committing suicide, issued the following statement by their managing director for mental health, John Campbell. The Sanctuary Service, Turning Point’s mental health crisis service, is based in Hastings.
