Give someone you love a little bit of Hastings this Christmas

Are you stumped by Christmas? No idea what to give anyone? Fed up with over-consumption and angry about the crazy cost of accommodation (Hastings’ propery prices rose by 12% in 2016)? Then think about giving a little bit of heart this Christmas by buying your loved one a share in the Heart of Hastings Community Land Trust. HOT’s Erica Smith is proud to be an early adopting shareholder.

Seaview choir caps successful concert

Seaview’s hugely enjoyable carol concert in St John the Evangelist Church last Saturday was supported by Sound Waves Community Choir and a cappella group, Now and Then and ended with a performance by Seaview’s own choir. The event proved a successful fundraiser, bringing in donations of £774 from a record crowd, estimated at 200 plus. The tally for the Big Sleep in September is still under way, but has so far reached more than £25,000. As public funding dwindles, Seaview is increasingly reliant on its own resources to raise the vital funds for its invaluable work with homeless, vulnerable and distressed people. Nick Terdre writes. Dorey the Wise go Off Axis in Hastings

The Off Axis Network works by connecting like-minded musicians from across the UK, enabling them to ‘trade’ their audiences with one another, so they can play more shows, in more places, to more people. The idea of the network is to substantially increase the circulation of artists around the country and offer them the opportunity to build national fan bases. Barry Ashley writes about last week’s Dorey the Wise gig with the Rupees at the Albion.

Council urged to start food waste recycling

Hastings Green Party has launched a Change petition calling for Hastings Borough Council to add food waste to their list of collectible and recyclable materials. Why? The move would cut down on the amount of waste material sent to landfill, reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfilled food waste, provide a useful source of compost and potentially – via anaerobic digestion – a source of energy, plus reduce mess on our streets caused by gulls tearing open rubbish bags containing food. HOT’s Zelly Restorick writes.

A pantomime for the darker side of life

Warning: expect ruthless pickpockets, disreputable lawyers, plagiarizing critics, drunkards and highwaypersons to invade St Leonards this Christmas Season… Erica Smith steps into the House of the Dark and Stormy Night and explores Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s 1830 classic novel, Paul Clifford.
