Relief over safe arrival of cross-channel refugees

Local refugee support organisations have expressed relief that several dozen people who last week made landfall in Hastings and Winchelsea after crossing the Channel in small boats arrived safely and without serious injury. Nick Terdre reports.

Dismay as ESCC proposes to close English language service for school-age refugees

East Sussex County Council’s move to close the English as an Additional Language service, a vital resource for school-age refugees, has provoked widespread concern among refugee families and support groups. While possible alternative ways of providing the service are being explored, they are calling on the community to respond to the consultation on the issue, which remains open until Sunday 3 February. Campaign for fairer refugee policy goes to Parliament

Moves to reform some of the unfairest elements of the UK’s policy towards refugees seeking asylum took a step forward at the annual Sanctuary in Parliament event hosted by the national City of Sanctuary movement and attended by Alex Kempton and Felicity Laurence from Hastings Community of Sanctuary. Felicity Laurence, chair of the Hastings group, who provided a vivid account of the ‘hostile environment’ underlying Home Office policy towards immigrants in a previous article, explains the new proposals.

Calais Children: A Case To Answer

At the January Hastings Debates, Clare Moseley, founder of Care4Calais, spoke about the current desperate situation on the ground for refugees in Calais. Professor Sue Clayton (Goldsmiths University) concluded the talk with an introduction to her award winning investigative film Calais Children: A Case To Answer. Next week, on March 28th, Professor Clayton returns to Hastings for a full screening of the film, with Q and A following. Felicity Laurence from Hastings Supports Refugees writes.

Help needed for Calais refugees

News from the refugee frontline in Calais

The Jungle camp in Calais was broken up and its inhabitants dispersed in 2016, but not surprisingly that did not mean that the many refugees and asylum-seekers looking to enter the UK disappeared.
