Sex and Success in Sussex – bosoms and love

The show Sex and Success in Sussex at Electro Studios Project Space brought together artists from London and Hastings for a varied and modern exhibition running from 30 May to 1 June. Jude Montague reflects.

The show brimmed with positive feelings and displayed a great sense of community between artist friends old and new. A really well attended private view spilled out onto the grassy lido with camaraderie and cultural conversations. The show did not exist in a bubble, having links to thoughts about the political situation and present times. It celebrated without forgetting the times in which we live, and the impact of our actions.

Fifty-seven artists contributed approximately one hundred and forty works. Artists came out of hiding to show for the first time in many years, others descended from London to have conversations and enjoy the gallery experience. It was a friendly gathering.

Curator’s special commendation went to paintings by Geraldine Swayne, Leah Germann and Sharon McPhee, sculptural pieces by Gordon Furl and Natalia Zargorkska-Thomas, and to Gary Willis for his witty photo installation.

Exhibitor Erica Smith said, “it was lovely to see so much energy and variety in the gallery space. The title was very much tongue in cheek – a play on similar sounding words. This gave the artists an opportunity to be literal or absurdist in the artworks that they submitted for exhibition.”

The exhibition was curated by Jude Montague with C J Simpson. Special thanks to Julia Maddison and Mark Walter.
