Arts on Prescription

Tara Reddy was one of the founding members of Hastings Online Times and is a long-time community activist. She is also the driving force behind Arts On Prescription (AOP) – a scheme where people who are feeling depressed, lonely or anxious are ‘prescribed’ art and creative courses through their GP surgery. Tara will be the guest on Thrive at 5 this Saturday on Hastings Isolation Station. Here she tells us more about Arts on Prescription.

Project Rewild

Under the all-encompassing veil of Coronavirus and the collective pain and fear, this has brought to people, something remarkable and heart-warming is happening… quiet footpaths are becoming well-trodden, previously secret hideaways are now being explored, the sound of children’s laughter is drifting through the woods as naturally as the sound of the blackbird’s song. Hastings is rewilding. Luke Funnell, the founder of Project Rewild tells us about his exciting new project.

Heart of Hastings feels the loss

Having helped secure £2m for the Heritage Action Zone project, Heart of Hastings is now involved in implementing the project, as well as playing an active role in the community response to the coronavirus crisis. But it continues to feel the loss of what would have been its flagship project, leading a community effort to build a housing estate full of affordable homes in the Ore Valley. This dream was shattered when the owner of the site, Sea Space, decided last year to sell it to a private developer. Nick Terdre reports.

Artist’s response to Covid-19 goes viral

An appeal to promote buying art direct from the artist that began in Hastings four weeks ago has gone global. At a time when exhibitions have been cancelled and galleries closed, #artistsupportpledge is bringing income to artists who are struggling as the result of the global pandemic. Meet artist Matthew Burrows who created the hashtag which gives creatives a new way to sell their work.

FREE creativity workshops

Local artists, Janey Moffatt, Lee Shearman, Pip Rowson and Sophie Shaw were recently awarded funding from the National Lottery ‘Awards for All’ to run a series of FREE creative workshops that promote good mental health and build community. These were due to start in May. Obviously these are not going ahead as planned, but they feel like they could be more valuable than ever in our current circumstances, so they’re thinking about how they can take the project online.

Comfort food – Part 1 (plus local literary info)

Do you  need a change from nordic noir or, as things are at the moment, global noir? Coronavirus means that we’re all in this together, but ironically, it’s the kind of shared experience that we are going to survive best if we stay on our own. Angela J. Phillip goes in search of some good books to lift our spirits. Time to stock up. Might be just as good as pasta and baked beans – and equally as necessary.
