Jen Painter: ‘Show and Sell’
Lifelong pacifist and prolific artist Jen Painter died last December. Her long-term comrade and friend, Ann Kramer, shares the news of an exhibition and fund-raising sale of her work.
The exhibition, which opens on Saturday 4 May at the Beacon on the West Hill, brings together a huge collection of Jen Painter’s art, including portrait and landscape paintings. All the work is for sale, with proceeds going to St Michael’s Hospice and Safebow Gazan aid.
Jen was a wonderful woman and a remarkable artist. A lot of the work in the exhibition reflects her involvement in and commitment to a range of political causes, but most particularly women’s rights, peace and the environment. She also produced some stunning political banners, often working with her friend Lorna Vahey.
Jen was very modest so it was a joy to see her Palestine banner on the local demonstration against General Dynamics the other week: it was almost as if she was marching with us.
The exhibition and sale opens at the Beacon, 67-68 St Mary’s Terrace, Hastings, from 2–6pm on 4 May. It continues to be open from 12–4pm each day, on Sunday 5 May, Monday 6 May, Saturday 11 May, Sunday 12 May and closes on Sunday 19 May. All the work is for sale, with proceeds going to St Michael’s Hospice and Safebow Gazan aid, in Jen’s memory.
