Mark Daniels: patience and observation

HOT’s Erica Smith met artist Mark Daniels on his allotment.

TONIGHT! (Wed 2 June) Art On Fire!

Tonight Francis Viner, Patrick Kealey and Sam Sharples aspire to catalyse, inspire and create community communication with their pop-up film and connection event, ‘Arts On Fire’. Communication with the co-creative community of Hastings and St Leonards – and emanating beyond these boundaries – inclusive of all: artist and non-artist. (We’re all artists underneath it all.) They interviewed a number of creative expressionists, taking the temperature of the times, asking: How are arts creators faring? What keeps them going right now? What inspires and infuriates them in our unfolding pandemic world? What is at the heart of their process? What role does art play in their life? HOT’s Zelly Restorick asked Patrick Kealey for more details.

John Cole kickstarts photography book of Hastings fishing families

In 1991 photographer John Cole came down to Hastings from London to take a few photos of the fishing community. This initial brush with Hastings has, in many ways, been a life changer. What he thought would be a day or two of photography turned into a two-year project. Then eight years later he moved down to Hastings and continued taking photographs of the Hastings fishing community. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths spoke to him about his love for the Hastings fishing fleet and the town.

Councillors’ war of words over Bulverhythe project

The 192-house proposed development project on the Bulverhythe recreation ground has aroused much controversy. Conservative councillors representing West St Leonards have come out against the project and the Labour council’s handling of it. Meanwhile, Andy Batsford, the lead councillor for housing, argues it is doable and essential if the borough’s housing needs are to be met. Nick Terdre reports.
