Dedicated Creative Quarter at Claremont?

A few weeks ago I raised the possibility via the Yahoo group Hastings Creatives, of establishing an Open Studios weekend in Claremont, inspired by a similar event in Folkestone. Subsequently, I have explored the potential to establish Claremont as a Creative Quarter in a more formal way. Why? Is this even possible? Richard de Pesando reports.

Five-metre long fossil free petition to ESCC

On 12 July people from around East Sussex – including members of Fossil Free Hastings – handed in a five-metre-long petition at County Hall in Lewes, urging East Sussex County Council to divest the East Sussex Pension Fund of its investments in fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas). Fossil Free Hastings reports.

Join Feast of the Dead choir

Hastings-based arts company, Dens & Signals, are offering two free Voice and Song Workshops, which offer people a fun opportunity to explore their unique voices and make some noise. Participants will build confidence and learn new skills – and be the first to sing a newly composed choral work. Those who take part will have the opportunity to perform as part of a temporary choir in Feast of the Dead, at the Stade Hall in September. 

Facing her fear for charity!

Jessamy Ingamells, a Year 6 pupil from Guesting Bradshaw CE Primary School, recently embarked on a sponsored challenge for Pestalozzi International Village Trust. Not only did she raise an incredible £100, but also faced her fear in holding a snake for 20 minutes. Hannah Nice reports from Pestalozzi.

The Great Survey with Wildworks

As part of the ROOT1066 International Arts Festival, Hastings Council has commissioned WildWorks Theatre Company to come to Hastings to make a show about us… and they need your help to create it. Michael Hambridge, Arts and Cultural Development Officer for Hastings Borough Council reports.

Summer Open Day at animal sanctuary

The local and much loved and appreciated Barby Keel Animal Sanctuary is holding their annual Open Day on Sunday 7 August. This is the sanctuary’s main fund raising event of the year, raising money to look after all the animals and birds who have been given refuge and a home. Zelly Restorick reports. Journeys: free dance festival

The free dance festival, Journeys, returns for its fourth year this weekend (23/24 July), with a once-in-a-lifetime dance experience: a UK premiere by Zaza Tsara – a troupe of 40 dancers from Mayotte, a tiny archipelago in the Indian Ocean, between Madagascar and Mozambique.
