ESCC urged to accept link between fossil fuels and climate change


Over 90 members of the public from across the country have called on East Sussex County Council (ESCC) to tell the truth about climate and fossil fuels, re-submitting three key questions on climate change to the ESCC Full Council meeting on 1 December. These same questions went unanswered at October’s Full Council meeting [1].

Schoolkids take note: schools help fund climate change!

As thousands of school students from across the UK prepare to take to the streets on Friday (15 March) to demand urgent action on climate change, Divest East Sussex has discovered that over 40 schools and sixth-form colleges in East Sussex are inadvertently funding global warming through their contributions to the East Sussex Pension Fund (ESPF). Divest fossil fuels battle continues

The chair of the East Sussex Pension Committee, Councillor Richard Stogdon, has said that he ‘entirely agrees’ that ‘any encouragement to the fracking industry’ – such as investments in ‘fracking companies’ – ‘should be avoided’, as these are ‘not in the best interest of the Council’s pensioners … [or] residents of East Sussex.’ Cllr Stogdon also stated that the Pension Committee would be ‘looking at strategies for reducing – as far as possible – any investment in coal where we see that’s in the best interests of our pensioners.’ [1] Information sent by Divest East Sussex.

Julia Hilton selected as Green candidate

The line-up of parliamentary candidates for Hastings and Rye is now complete – unless Ukip against expectation put up a candidate – with Julia Hilton’s selection to represent the Green Party. Nick Terdre reports.

Brighton votes on fossil fuel divestment

Brighton and Hove City Council votes tomorrow – Thursday 6 April – on a motion calling on fossil fuel investments held by the East Sussex pension fund to be disposed of. Ahead of the meeting divestment campaigners will demonstrate in support of the motion outside Brighton Town Hall. Nick Terdre reports.

Divestment advice for pension committee

Divestment campaigners from Hastings and elsewhere in East Sussex stepped up their campaign to persuade the East Sussex Pension Committee to switch funds out of fossil fuels by sending the latest findings of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) to committee chairman, Richard Stogden.
