Summer Open Day at animal sanctuary

The local and much loved and appreciated Barby Keel Animal Sanctuary is holding their annual Open Day on Sunday 7 August. This is the sanctuary’s main fund raising event of the year, raising money to look after all the animals and birds who have been given refuge and a home. Zelly Restorick reports. The BK Wish List is below: please take a look!

Barby Keel Animal Sanctuary is run by a small but dedicated team of workers and volunteers, who look after all of the residents given a safe haven. However, they’re always looking for other people to help out, especially as one of the main regular volunteers is having medical treatment at this time.

Local St Leonardite, Dan the Farm Animal Manager, who works at The Sanctuary, says: “This year has been particularly hard going due to the local Health and Safety Inspector imposing new rules that stem from bad cases of e-coli and salmonella being recorded at petting farms. Unfortunately this now means it affects the sanctuary. Whereas before we had all our chickens and ducks out with the public, they now have to be in an area where the public can’t come in contact with them. We’ve built a viewing area so you can still see them sunbathing, feeding and running around.

“More costly is the need to double fence all our farm animals so again the public cannot touch them. This has cost us a great deal but we are trying to build viewing platforms and try to give the public as much access to our eclectic bunch of animals as possible.”
