Climate campaigners dismayed by ESCC’s contradictory stance

Campaigners were left flabbergasted and angered when East Sussex County Council passed a motion acknowledging that a climate emergency exists but overwhelmingly rejected a motion calling for its pension fund to divest out of fossil fuels. Nick Terdre reports.

Hastings joins day of climate change action

Thousands of actions will be taking place across the world, from Papua New Guinea to Panama, as part of Rise for Climate, a day of action calling for a fast and fair transition to a world without fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas) and 100% renewable energy for all. Managed decline of oil industry

At a full Council meeting at County Hall in Lewes, campaigners handed-in over 2,800 signatures calling for East Sussex County Council to divest local people’s pensions from fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas). Cllr Richard Stogdon, Chair of the East Sussex Pension Committee stated:  ‘[I]t is in the best interest of the [East Sussex Pension] Fund to get the entire oil industry to put itself on a pathway of “managed decline”.’

Divest fossil fuels battle continues

The chair of the East Sussex Pension Committee, Councillor Richard Stogdon, has said that he ‘entirely agrees’ that ‘any encouragement to the fracking industry’ – such as investments in ‘fracking companies’ – ‘should be avoided’, as these are ‘not in the best interest of the Council’s pensioners … [or] residents of East Sussex.’ Cllr Stogdon also stated that the Pension Committee would be ‘looking at strategies for reducing – as far as possible – any investment in coal where we see that’s in the best interests of our pensioners.’ [1] Information sent by Divest East Sussex.
