Challenge of Change sessions prove an exciting new venture

Hastings Philharmonic has launched an exciting new venture this spring which brought an enthusiastic gathering together at The Beacon for an evening of poetry and music. Under the banner of The Challenge of Change, musician Marcio da Silva and poet Antony Mair approached the concept of change – but did so from very different perspectives, writes HOT’s music correspondent Brian Hick. Composers come to Hastings to battle for competition prize

This Friday at St Mary in the Castle sees the climax of Marcio da Silva’s four-day Challenge of Change Festival with the Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra performing Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, the brilliant Ayşen Ulucan on violin. The event also showcases the six finalist composers of the Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Composition Competition, three of whom are present in Hastings for the occasion, writes Chris Cormack.

Living in Hastings most of us love the sea – either to look at, appreciate the light, the sun and the moon shining on the sea.  And be in it. And now it is a wonderful sight on a still sunny morning or evening seeing people taking to the sea, swimming, paddle-boarding, kayaking and kite surfing. But how much do people really know about the marine environment?

Women composers to the fore in the Challenge of Change

On Wednesday 1 May at 7.30pm the Kino-Teatr in St Leonards hosts a chamber music concert dedicated to female composers as part of Hastings Philharmonic’s Challenge of Change festival. This features some great musicians, including pianist Roman Kosyakov, winner of the 2018 HIPCC, and Angela Jung, the lead violin of Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra. Will Robertson, cello, and counter-tenor Alex Pullinger make up a very impressive team, writes Chris Cormack.

Tony Kofi: A Portrait of Cannonball

British jazz saxophonist Tony Kofi will be headlining at the next Jazz Hastings session on 7 May with his new show A Portrait of Cannonball. Julian Norridge supplies the details.
