Patrick Altes urges tolerance at Wave of Dreams gallery

A Wave of Dreams gallery is making its mark with its programming of innovative artists in St Leonards. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was intrigued when she walked into its latest show, Tolerance by international artist Patrick Altes. The images are seemingly primitive, simple figures, but the work is complex as he digs deep into his personal history.

John Dorsey, poet

Prizewinning US poet, John Dorsey at Bookbusters (and literary events from 29 October 2019)

‘Do you need tickets?’ somebody asked at the door of Bookbusters as she peered into the crowded shop. But no, you didn’t. For a donation of a couple of pounds you could listen to the poems, read your own and have a glass of wine. Time out from the grey drizzle for two or three hours as Tim Barton, the shop owner, and Pete Donohue, the host, made everyone warmly welcome. The guest of honour was the prize-winning American poet, John Dorsey.

Liberal Democrats and Greens move into campaigning mode

As a frustrated prime minister Boris Johnson threatens to force a general election, local parties are moving into campaigning mode. The Liberal Democrats have circulated a flyer and upped the publicity over their anti Brexit stance, while the Green Party, which has its eye on next May’s local elections rather than the forthcoming general election, are bringing their local MEP to town next week. Nick Terdre reports.

Victor Willing retrospective at Hastings Contemporary

Victor Willing: Visions is the first major British retrospective of work by Victor Willing since his death in 1988. It is also the first gallery-wide exhibition at the new Hastings Contemporary. The 65 paintings, drawings and sculptures selected for display tell the story of a brilliant young talent at the Slade in the early 1950s, regarded by his contemporaries as the one to watch, writes Christopher Cormack
