Caroline Lucas to launch local Greens’ election campaign

Caroline Lucas, the Green Party MP, will return to Hastings in late March to launch the party’s local election campaign in which the Greens will stand candidates in all wards. Nick Terdre reports.

Greenway folk and others get ready for fresh campaigning

Walking, cycling and other forms of sustainable locomotion are in focus as Hastings Greenway Group holds its agm and calls for the reinstatement of £3m diverted by the county council from walking and cycling purposes, and a meeting is called to set up a local branch of the Living Streets movement. Liberal Democrats and Greens move into campaigning mode

As a frustrated prime minister Boris Johnson threatens to force a general election, local parties are moving into campaigning mode. The Liberal Democrats have circulated a flyer and upped the publicity over their anti Brexit stance, while the Green Party, which has its eye on next May’s local elections rather than the forthcoming general election, are bringing their local MEP to town next week. Greens decide not to stand a candidate, Tories yet to choose

The Greens have decided not to stand a candidate in the general election but to concentrate their efforts on next May’s local elections. Meanwhile the Tories have yet to officially decide who will replace Amber Rudd, and the Brexit candidate withdraws. Nick Terdre reports.

Greenway group supports ESCC climate emergency petition

Hastings Greenway Group has several events planned for the autumn, including campaigning for a petition calling on East Sussex County Council to declare a climate emergency. However the greenway walk planned for next Saturday has been cancelled. Nick Terdre reports.

Solar panels in Hastings Country Park – ecology or politics?

Hastings Borough Council (HBC), with its majority of Labour councillors, has proposed to put two arrays of solar panels in the Country Park and one at Upper Wilting Farm in Crowhurst. Amber Rudd, Hastings and Rye Conservative MP, has launched a petition against this. HOT’s Chandra Masoliver asks Julia Hilton, spokesperson for Hastings Green Party, for her thoughts on the ecological and political issues involved.

Local Labour’s PR vote welcomed by Greens

The local Labour Party has endorsed the principle of proportional representation for parliamentary elections, a move that has been welcomed by Hastings Greens. Nick Terdre reports.

HBC planners back amusement park changes

Council planning officers have recommended acceptance of the application for “extensions and refurbishments” of the sea-front amusement park in the Old Town when it comes before the planning committee next Wednesday. If planning permission is granted, a new footpath will replace the one running between the amusement park and the boating lake. Nick Terdre reports.
