The Love of Mars and Venus: myth, love and lust

The Barefoot Opera Company is not one for standing still. In its aim to make a theatrical/operatic experience open to everyone, the company brings in music and dance – and sometimes food and drink – to create atmospheric evenings to stir the senses of sight, sound and taste. Lauris Morgan-Griffiths writes.

‘One man, two guvnors’ … one great night out

Richard Bean’s re-working of an 18th century Commedia dell’arte by Carlo Goldoni at The National Theatre in 2011 was not, on the face of it, a nailed-on triumph in prospect. In the event though, One Man, Two Guvnors with James Corden in the lead became a runaway success, transferring to the West End and then on to Broadway. It’s a brilliant and hilarious play when performed by seasoned and highly talented professionals, but how would it fair in the hands of the entirely amateur company at The Stables theatre in Hastings? Toby Sargent was at the first night to find out.

Call for public debate on sports village proposal

Hastings Borough Council’s first discussion in cabinet of the sports village development proposed by Hastings United Football Club (HUFC) has been postponed to its March meeting. Meanwhile the council has been prompted to hold a public consultation on the project before making any premature commitment to it. Nick Terdre reports.

Stories into Light film night

Glyn Carter from local film making company, Stories into Light, invites you to a screening of short films at The Palace Bar on 7 February. Glyn, who’s been making films for a couple of years now, mostly with local talent, aims to tell good stories with real characters. Deeper themes seem to emerge, he says, but accessible entertainment is the watchword. Mostly comedies, some were adapted for stage in the Hastings Fringe in August. HOT’s Zelly Restorick asks Glyn some questions about his film experience.

Don’t Turn Back

Greeting the visitor in the Jerwood Gallery is a barrage of images. Surprising and extraordinary. It took HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths a few minutes to get her head around the display and focus on the array of drawings.

A nuclear ban is coming

Next Tuesday, 7 February, they’ll be a local event on a theme of international importance when Hastings Against War host a talk and discussion on the theme of nuclear weapons. In March, the United Nations will begin negotiating a treaty to ban all nuclear weapons. This follows a UN vote last October calling for such negotiations to begin. (1) John Enefer writes.
