A nuclear ban is coming
Next Tuesday, 7 February, they’ll be a local event on a theme of international importance when Hastings Against War host a talk and discussion on the theme of nuclear weapons. In March, the United Nations will begin negotiating a treaty to ban all nuclear weapons. This follows a UN vote last October calling for such negotiations to begin. (1) John Enefer writes.
The UN vote resulted in 123 nations voting in favour of a treaty to ban nuclear weapons, 38 against and 16 nations abstaining from the vote. The UK government voted against these negotiations taking place, but Hastings Against War hope that it can be encouraged to play a constructive role in the process.
The speaker at the event will be Fiona MacGregor, Hastings link person to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. “All other indiscriminate weapons have been banned”, she says “and it’s time for nuclear weapons to be treated the same as any other weapon of mass destruction.”
Apart from the talk and discussion, short films on the subject of nuclear weapons will be screened.
A Nuclear Ban Is Coming: Hastings Against War
The event will take place on Tuesday 7 February at the Quaker Meeting House, 5 South Terrace, Hastings, starting at 7.30pm. This is a ground floor venue with easy access. Entrance is free and all are welcome.
