Brede ‘Giants’

On Saturday (earlier this month) a brief window of bright sunny weather opened in the morning, so we jumped through it and headed out to Brede – the restored steam engines at the old Waterworks only operate on the first Saturday of each month and on bank holidays. As the first Saturday of March is coming up, Hastings Battleaxe recommends a visit.

Entwined with nature

Drawing on its permanent collection, Hastings Museum presents an exhibition comprising an eclectic selection of ceramics, design sketches, still life paintings and botanical illustrations inspired by plants. Roz Cran went to take a look.

Gearing up for the Piano Concerto Competition

The first three weeks of March in Hastings are devoted to the Hastings Musical Festival, which has been going for more than a century.  It’s not a festival like those in Edinburgh or Brighton, but consists of a series of competitions for performers in music and dance.   In recent years the jewel in the crown of the Festival has been the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition, which takes place in the first week of March, the final being on Saturday  8 March, writes Antony Mair

Bargains galore at HAF auction!

Hastings Arts Forum’s annual auction, which takes place this Saturday, is highly recommended to anyone seeking real art bargains and surprises, with over 160 lots donated by members. The sale will take place on Saturday 22nd February at 2pm. Viewing is from 11.00am–5pm daily. The standard and quality of the lots make for a great exhibition in its own right, writes Siobhan O’Hanlon.

A lull between storms

The past few weeks haven’t been much fun, weatherwise.  Those of you living outside the UK may have seen the odd snap of people wading through waist-high waters in their living-rooms, writes Antony Mair.

Two Points Unnecessarily Lost

A big hand to Simon Rudkins, the phenomenal groundsman of The U’s, whose hard work allowed the pitch to pass the inspection at 11am. United had lost 2-0 to Merstham earlier this season, but with 9 places and 20 points separating the two sides, United were favourites to walk away with three points, regardless of their current form. Frankie Sawyer makes his first start at the Pilot Field since returning last week and is re-joined by Trevor McCreadie, who has been recovering from a knock he suffered a couple of weeks ago. Liam Willis was at the Pilot Field to report the action.
