Auctioneer Martin Phillips at work at last year's HAF auction.

Bargains galore at HAF auction!

Hastings Arts Forum’s annual auction, which takes place this Saturday, is highly recommended to anyone seeking real art bargains and surprises, with over 160 lots donated by members. The sale will take place on Saturday 22nd February at 2pm. Viewing is from 11.00am–5pm daily. The standard and quality of the lots make for a great exhibition in its own right, writes Siobhan O’Hanlon.

The forum has held its annual auctions since 2008. The event is a really important fund-raiser for the organisation – takings came to more than £8,000 last year – and makes for an entertaining afternoon presided over by the ever exuberant local auctioneer Martin Phillips.

Last year’s most lucrative donation was a painting by Alan Rankle that sold for a genuinely bargain price of £1,700. Two more Alan Rankle paintings have been donated to this year’s event so more show-stopping moments can be expected.
Printed colour catalogues for the auction are available from the gallery and in various locations around town.

A PDF document of the catalogue with larger images is also available from the website (http://www.hastingsartsforum.co.uk/auction-catalogue-now-available/).
Martin Phillips has also written an encouraging guide to buying at an auction for those who might feel intimidated about having a bid (http://www.hastingsartsforum.co.uk/arts-forum-auction-2014/) which you can also find on the front desk in the gallery.
