Fishing for Buoys

HOT’s Cathy Simpson, artist, illustrator, cartoonist, writer, St Leonardite, she of the long flowing locks and frocks is having an exhibition, Fishing for Buoys at The Gill Gallery on Kings Road in St Leonards, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick.

Space is the Place

This Sunday, 11 August, there will be an extraordinary perseid meteor shower – and the best place to watch it from is the ’60s-space-age-retro-glamour of Herstmonceux Observatory. HOT’s Erica Smith closes one eye and gets ready to squint through the telescope at the final frontier…

Hastings Whelk Eating Champtionship

Hastings Whelk Eating Championship

The Hastings Old Town Week Carnival continues  until Sunday 11 August. So far there have been various events from music on the Stade, town walks, open gardens and studios and the Sea Boot Race but the event that attracted HOT’s intrepid reporter, Lauris Morgan-Griffiths, was the rather nauseating-sounding  Great Whelk Eating Competition.

The Gilded Hand

Raising the ‘Gilded Hand’ on the Stade on 17 August,  the first ever Gilded Hand Buskers Fair is released, a day-long celebration of the busker and the troubadour.  The Gilded Hand is an ancient sign of freedom of speech and gave performers the right to perform in medieval squares without fear of arrest. So whilst the hand is raised, come and join us in the Stade to hear a variety of performers on several pitches, writes John Knowles.

Contemporary music to stir the emotions

The second International Composers’ Festival is fast approaching and renowned Japanese composer, Nobuya Monta, has been officially appointed the Festival’s new Composer in Residence. Maestro Monta will be composing a new orchestral work especially created for the Festival on the 6 & 7 September 2013. He will also travel from Osaka with a host of Japanese musicians to be with us at the Festival in Hastings!

Hastings Carnival Week gets going…

Hastings Carnival Week is a wonderful annual miscellany of local events, including open gardens and studios, Carnival Queens, a spectacular pram race (of which more in a few days’ time), historical walks round the Old Town and quaint goings-on with whelk-eating, tugs-of-war, seaboot races etc.  Needless to say, there is ample opportunity for the locals to dress up, which they enjoy more than anything else, writes Antony Mair.

Hastings Old Town – centre of creativity

When we told friends in France that we were moving to Hastings, there were mixed reactions.  The usual one was “Why Hastings?” asked with an air of perplexity.  That was easily dealt with – it had happened entirely by chance.  But one friend followed it up with – “but there won’t be any cultural life there”.  I know what she meant: there’s no theatre to speak of and precious little in the way of classical music, writes Antony Mair.
