Fishing for Buoys
HOT’s Cathy Simpson, artist, illustrator, cartoonist, writer, St Leonardite, she of the long flowing locks and frocks is having an exhibition, Fishing for Buoys at The Gill Gallery on Kings Road in St Leonards, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick.
Cathy’s paintings are the sort you need to spend some leisurely time with, to take in all the details, nuances and humour. I’ve seen the exhibition posters around town and have been drawn to their bright, summery, uplifting, happiness-inducing colours. I get the feeling that you could ask her to draw anything and she’d be able to make it either beautiful or amusing. Take a look at Cathy’s cartoons on her website and you’ll see immediately that she has a quirky, off-beat sense of humour.
She’s also a dab hand at caricatures, if you’re interested in seeing a humorous interpretation of yourself or your friends and family. We’ve all willingly been ‘done’ at HOT!
Cathy also teaches, working in schools, community groups and within the mental health field, inspiring people of all ages to participate and find their own inner artist.
You can meet Cathy at the Gill Gallery this Saturday, 10 August between 10am and 1pm, have a chat, spend some time with her paintings and enjoy tea and a bun. The paintings themselves will be on display until Saturday 24 August.
