Council calls for comments on draft Local Plan

The new Local Plan for Hastings is out to consultation in draft, and the council has issued a call for people to get involved and give their views – it will be the guiding document for planning for the next 18 years. Nick Terdre reports.

UN nuclear weapons ban comes into force

Friday 22 January marked a historic moment as a United Nations ban on nuclear weapons officially came into force. Hastings was among the many municipalities to support the treaty when Hastings Borough Council voted in favour last October. The Hastings Against War group recently issued a press release detailing what this will mean for the continued global bid towards nuclear disarmament. Words and pictures supplied by John Enefer.

Local Plan consultation: your views wanted on council’s West St Leonards projects!

Local artist Laetitia Yhap celebrates  80th birthday with exhibition at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery

Laetitia Yhap is a familiar site cycling around Hastings, usually stylishly dressed with colourful hair to match. It is no surprise to learn that she is a well known British artist. What is incredible is that she is 80 years old and Hastings Museum & Art Gallery is celebrating the event with an exhibition. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was delighted to look at it, distanced, online.

Mass Covid outbreak in Home Office camp for asylum-seekers

A mass outbreak of Covid-19 has taken place in Napier Barracks, Folkestone, where the Home Office has consigned several hundred men seeking asylum in overcrowded and deprived conditions under the unsympathetic care of a private contractor. The Confederate Flag: not illegal but unacceptable

A confederate flag seen flying in a boat yard on Rock-a-Nore Road has been removed after residents contacted police and local councillors and took to social media to voice their concerns. Emma Harwood reports.

As we come to the end of 2020, Covid has made all our lives very uncertain; it has forced everyone to consider what life is about. For some of our local community they’ve been planting vegetables and fruit to feed their families, growing more plants for wildlife.
