Singled out – the singles night that’s making couples jealous

Earlier this summer, there was a buzz on Facebook about the amazing number of gorgeous, bright, single women in this town. Someone suggested bussing in blokes from London to appreciate our fine crop of beachside beauties. Then Alison Cooper – beautiful, intelligent, single, and practical – decided to take the situation in hand. Erica Smith asked her to tell us more about this Friday’s singles night.

Jazz Hastings in September

Nostalgic visit for Bernard

A trip to a 1930’s greenhouse brought back war-time memories for former gardener Bernard Mallion, writes Lynda Foy. The 91-year-old, who lives in Hollington, St Leonards, started work at Alexandra Park in Hastings when he was 16 in February 1941, and stayed there until 1943 when he joined the Royal Navy.

Militarisation in Schools

A local Head Teacher, Paula Radice, addressed the subject of ‘Militarisation in Schools’ at a packed meeting in Hastings on 5 September . She called for a balanced view on the military to be allowed in schools. Working in the education system she has observed the changing relationship between schools and the military, and traces the changes back to UK deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq. John Enefer writes.

Electric train plans thwarted

Dear Energy-wise readers. For those of us who believe that at this time in humanity’s history, energy wise transportation would make good common sense, maybe we can still make a difference to the latest decision by the government to remain with diesel trains, as opposed to transitioning to electric. HOT’s Zelly Restorick writes.

Binsted Woods threatened

Yes the Binsted Woods complex is under threat again. Not local to us around here, I know, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick, but awareness of how many tree-loving individuals and groups there are who read this publication – and the fact that it’s possible to take action to stop the development – have catalysed me to post this article. The Protect Our Woodland group sent me details of the campaign, raising awareness of this threat to the woodland.

Can’t see the wood for the trees?

Some healthy oak trees on Council land have escaped felling, no thanks to Hastings Borough Council (HBC) — but many others are under threat for no clear reason, reports Bernard McGinley.

Zoom and HFS collaboration

This September, Zoom Arts is launching a brand new group exhibition celebrating the Hastings based charity HFS (Hastings and Rother Furniture Services) to produce an intriguing and informative exhibition to be shown at the Zoom Gallery, Warrior Square Station in St Leonards on Sea. Zoom Arts’ Susan Cleland writes.
