Concerns aired about Observer Building plan
Concerns about the proposed development of the Observer Building in central Hastings were aired at a public meeting on Monday, with former local councillor Godfrey Daniel providing advice on how objections should be framed. The period for submitting comments has been extended to 9 September. Nick Terdre listened in.
Ahead of the world public premiere of Shingetsu, a 90-minute drama which will be screened alongside a series of short films as part of the Film Fringe strand of the Hastings Fringe (Friday 9 September, The Sussex Exchange, 7pm, free), Miranda Gavin talks to director Paul Schoolman (Jail Caesar) and actor Alice Krige (Chariots of Fire, Star Trek: First Contact and Jail Caesar) about war, trauma and healing.
Marcus Harvey at the Jerwood
The Chapman Brothers exhibited at the Jerwood in 2014 and are now followed by another YBA (Young British Artist): Marcus Harvey. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along to experience the exhibition as she was not very familiar with his work. Except for one specific piece of art.
Petition launched to halt road construction due to excessive air pollution levels
Combe Haven Defenders have launched a petition calling for construction of Sea Change Sussex’s Queensway Gateway Road to be suspended while a potentially serious breach of air pollution limits is investigated. Nick Terdre reports.
Grassroots 1066 events gather momentum
As the date of the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in mid October draws near, HOT is learning of more grassroots events to commemorate the occasion, as Nick Terdre reports.
Battle of Hastings mosaic goes on display
A marvellous recreation of the Bayeux Tapestry depicting the Battle of Hastings has gone on display at St Mary in the Castle, after being transported halfway round the world from New Zealand. The recreation, a steel mosaic, also includes historical sections missing from the famous tapestry. Nick Terdre went to view it. Photos by Tracy Hobden, Hastings Borough Council.
Early 2017 start to Archery Ground construction
Following approval for the changes it requested to the Archery Ground planning permission, developer Gemselect says it expects to be ready to start construction in about six months’ time and have the first houses ready for occupation after another two and a half years. Nick Terdre reports.
