Local residents blow whistles in the snow to stop the Link Road

Today, Monday 11 March, opponents of the Bexhill-Hastings Link Road (BHLR) braved the snow to blow whistles outside the local Department for Transport (DfT) office in Hastings – and leafleted workers going into the DfT’s Information Rights. The action launched a call for DfT workers to “Blow the Whistle on the Link Road” by leaking the Department’s blacked-out recommendations about whether or not to fund the £100m project. HOT’s Erica Smith applauds the campaigners for another creative protest.

Hastings  piano  competition reaches out to community

The Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition (HIPCC), more than any previous year, is bringing the Hastings Musical Festival to the attention of ordinary Hastings  and 1066 people with a programme of attractive fringe and main events to entice us with great piano music, all thanks to support from the Kowitz Family Foundation and an Arts Council grant, writes Chris Cormack.

Ibsen’s skeletons in the cupboard

Henrick Ibsen’s play Ghosts sent shock waves through Victorian high society when it dared to hold up a shattered mirror to conventional ideas of sex, a woman’s place and the one-way traffic which saw men hold cock-sure-sway over society. Ghosts deals with the undercurrents which eat away unseen at the foundations of so-called civil society (in this case infidelity and syphilis) till one day the foundations collapse and reveal the gaping hole that was always there. John Knowles reviews the new production at The Stables Theatre.

Bringing horror Hollywood to Hastings

Hastings will soon have claim to international cult film fame when the Cult Film Archive moves here from London. It is the world’s only research centre that contains over 4,000 international movies which will be used as a resource for the new BA Honours degree in Digital Film launched by the Hastings arm of the University of Brighton in October. Linked to the archive and degree course is the annual Cine Excess Cult Film Festival which will be held in Hastings, St Leonards and Brighton in November.  HOT reporter Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went to see the man behind this cult phenomenon, Dr Xavier Mendik.
