Coastal Space? Whatever happened to Local Space?
The council has joined forces with local housing association AmicusHorizon to create a social regeneration project known as Coastal Space. This follows the withdrawal of Newham-based housing association Local Space from its much-heralded £2 million partnership with HBC, which had been designed to achieve very similar goals. Below we briefly relay HBC’s press release about the new link with AmicusHorizon, but keep your eye on HOT for the full story behind the departure of Local Space.
Home heating – get wised up this Saturday
The rising cost of gas and electricity is making it increasingly hard for poorer people to heat their houses properly in winter. Fuel poverty – when a household has to spend more than 10% of its budget on heating – has become a major social problem. Practical advice on how to make your home warmer and your energy bills lower will be available this Saturday, 9 March, in Bexhill, as Nick Terdre reports.
Travel on a shoestring : Budapest
Seeking a few days away-from-it-all, HOT’s Bev Francis, flew to Budapest, discovering a location which shares some interesting similarities with her home town of Hastings.
Getting excited about a roundabout…
Pelham Roundabout is on the seafront in Hastings, more or less on the border between Hastings Old Town and what is referred to as the New Town – basically the shopping centre, with a sterile mall and some struggling High Street chains. It is edged on one side by a car park on the front, on another by an Italian restaurant and on the third by a branch of Iceland and an office block called Aquila House – Aquila being pronounced by the locals to rhyme with Godzilla, writes Antony Mair.
From one end of Sussex to the other…
Hastings-based artist Laetitia Yhap currently has an exhibition of her drawings and paintings of the Stade fishing community on show. But you will have to traverse Sussex all the way to Chichester’s Pallant House to see them. HOT’s Erica Smith went along for the ride and enjoyed viewing Yhap’s artworks from this new perspective.
Fishing for a sense of place: major new survey
A survey has been launched to find out how the fishing fleet influences the way people feel about Hastings.
