Council and partners set up community support hub

As the corona virus tightens its grip on society, there has been a heart-warming upswell across the country of support and offers of help for those who most need it – the elderly, vulnerable, those suffering from the virus and those who for whatever reason are unable to provide for themselves in conditions of lockdown. Hastings Borough Council, together with partners, has set up a community hub to coordinate the effort. Nick Terdre reports.

Emergency health regulations brought into force in Hastings

Hastings has moved into lockdown following the introduction of emergency health regulations by the council which close down shops apart from food retailers and encourage citizens to restrict their outings. Enforcement officers will oversee retailers’ compliance with the new regime. Nick Terdre reports.

Climate campaigners dismayed by ESCC’s contradictory stance

Campaigners were left flabbergasted and angered when East Sussex County Council passed a motion acknowledging that a climate emergency exists but overwhelmingly rejected a motion calling for its pension fund to divest out of fossil fuels. Nick Terdre reports.

England Coast Path goes kinky in Hastings Country Park

The landslip below Rocklands caravan park has obliged Natural England to go the long way round to accommodate the Hastings Country Park section of the coastal path, as Andrew Colquhoun, vice chair of the Friends of Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve, explains.

Climate motion passed by HBC, but Greens disappointed

Hastings now has a climate emergency policy, following the unanimous approval given by the full council last week. A Tory amendment was voted down, and the Greens, who started the climate emergency ball rolling, declared themselves disappointed with the policy. Nick Terdre reports.

Dismay as ESCC proposes to close English language service for school-age refugees

East Sussex County Council’s move to close the English as an Additional Language service, a vital resource for school-age refugees, has provoked widespread concern among refugee families and support groups. While possible alternative ways of providing the service are being explored, they are calling on the community to respond to the consultation on the issue, which remains open until Sunday 3 February.
