Fishing boats and seagulls, Hull and Hastings

HOT reporter Joe Fearn lived in Hull from 1990 to 1993 when studying philosophy at Hull University. He has recently moved back to Hull after four years in both St Leonards and Hastings. Here Joe compares life in North Humberside then and now, and also compares Hull to life in East Sussex.

Farsighted United Excited

Making space and light: Ian Francis at Gill Gallery

Taking our cultural bearings

Although Hastings failed to make the City of Culture 2017 shortlist, can this short-lived initiative prove the catalyst for boosting the town’s image as a cultural centre? A follow-up meeting on Monday may provide the answer, writes Nick Terdre.

Taking a stand for vegan cakes

One’s not a vegan and neither has a diploma in baking. But if you want a tasty vegan or gluten-free cake, 1066 Cake Stand’s Kevin Young and Shelley Feldman are the bakers to go to. Usually to be found in their shop opposite Morrison’s or weekly stall in Hastings market, they’ll be offering their wares, as well as their second recipe book, at St Leonards Festival on Saturday. Nick Terdre met them.

Rock Icons

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, The Who and Jimi Hendrix are all temporarily residing on Norman Road.  Icons now, they weren’t back in the 1960s, as they started off on their strasophere-defying career paths.  But icons need images and images need photographers -and these photographers were contemporaries of their subjects; friends, hanging out, taking photos, up close and personal. And as the rock scene took off, the artists’ images were in great demand – and still are.   HOT reporter Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went to remind herself of those days and these, now, Rock Icons – the photographers and the rock stars.

No more ear-candling in the Old Town

That’s if East Sussex County Council gets its way!  And no more chiropody and podiatry, no more computer rescue, carers’ therapies, massage and yoga, calligraphy, local history group, philosophy classes, bridge and scrabble, art and fruit & veg market. This is just a snapshot of the activities aimed towards older people available  in the Old Town’s Isabel Blackman Centre, which East Sussex County Council (ESCC) wants to close as part of its cuts programme, writes HOT’s Chris Cormack.

St Leonards Festival is this Saturday!
