Hail St Mary’s!

St Mary-in-the-Castle has succeeded in completing the formalities for establishing its new management structure as a charitable trust and company limited by guarantee under the supervision of an  independent board of trustees. The trustees designate have been meeting for the last six months to plan how they will run the venue. Last week Charity Commission approval was obtained, writes Chris Cormack.

Additional £13m needed for BHLR

ESCC are considering the approval of over £13m of public money to cover increased construction costs, construction risks and protester action, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick. In addition, Amber Rudd is calling for ESCC to commit to building the Baldslow link, joining Queensway to the A21, costing an estimated £30m.

Drawing Paradise on the ‘Axis of Evil’

Local artist, peace campaigner and activist, Emily Johns, travelled to Iran in 2006 and again this February on an international peacemaking delegation. The resulting artwork is being exhibited at the Hastings Arts Forum and offers personal insights into life in Iran, past and present. HOT’s Zelly Restorick went along to take a look.

Accordion heaven

For lovers of the accordion this was indeed a weekend to be remembered with not one, but two outstanding performances. On Friday night we were treated to the dry wit, political satire and Jewish Klezmer punk of Canadian Geoff Berner and his stripped down band of violin and paired down drum kit. On Saturday we had the Tiger Lillies, playing dark songs with disturbing lyrics at the Stade. HOT’s John Knowles was there.

Bexhill promenade cycling approved

It will now be legal to cycle along Bexhill’s seafront. Rother District Council’s cabinet this week approved the promenade between Galley Hill and the toilets on West Parade as a public cycle route, writes Chris Cormack.
