How do you know if I’m real? (plus literary events from 17 Sept 2019)

Is Artificial Intelligence (AI) about to write our news stories, articles and novels? We’ve got cars that drive themselves, planes that no longer need a pilot, fake news to manipulate our voting patterns, so how about stories? Are writers about to be made redundant? Shall we be left at the mercy of algorithms devised by the powerful to lull us into submission to their agendas? Angela J. Phillip investigates (or at least, she says it’s her).

Bookchat: Be fearless – write your truth (and events Aug 13 onwards)

We have an almost overwhelming urge to make things better. To chop out ragged edges so that clear shapes emerge. To provide explanations and make things fit. The most powerful urge is to send a moral message but all these instincts are the enemies of our truths. Angela J. Phillip looks for inspiration from the writers of five incredible books who showed and shared their characters’ experience, but left the readers to interpret.

Browsing in Bookbuster

Bookchat: How to browse efficiently (and events Aug 6 onwards)

Seems like a contradiction – browsing and efficiency, but it isn’t. Both are necessary. Browsing equals slow and easy, gentle relaxation. Efficiency equals the speed with which you reach your goal. The more easily you hit your target for the kind of books you like, the more relaxed you will be and the bigger a bag you’ll need for your booty (or the bigger a letterbox you’ll need for your delivery – probably you’ll have to make sure a neighbour is in). Or you might be feeling thrifty so you just buy one and know that you’ve hit the jackpot. Hours of pleasure all lined up. But there are various ways to do it and you need to adapt from one place to another. Angela J. Phillip takes a look at how to organise your search.
