Are you interested in discovering what creative ink-on-wood images would emerge onto your pieces of paper?A ten week ‘Introduction To Wood Engraving’ course with ‘artist, writer and pen chewer’, Emily Johns will be held at Sussex Coast College, Station Plaza on Tuesdays, starting 19 September. Zelly Restorick writes.
The course, Introduction To Wood Engraving, offers you the opportunity to learn about this delicate and powerful printmaking technique, whose most well known local practitioners were Eric Ravillious and Eric Gill.
Emily will be covering the history, tools, image making and printing. A practice block of wood, ink and paper will be supplied. Use college tools or bring your own. Extra wood blocks and cutting surfaces can be purchased during the class.
I’ve known Emily and her work for a number of years. We cross paths now and again around the town, sharing certain causes. I admire her determination and commitment to the things she cares about – and I love her artwork: her technique and skills; her connection with the different materials she uses to express herself and the actual creative expressions which emerge.
If you have an interest in printmaking, Introduction To Wood Engraving may excite you. 6.00pm -8.30pm : 19 September to 28 November – and another course from 9 January to 20 March. Price : £130. Tutor: Emily Johns. Book with the college: Introduction To Wood Engraving.
