Sleight of hand in government’s funding package for councils

With local and general elections looming, and Conservative MPs becoming anxious, the government has loosened the purse strings somewhat to increase funding for local authorities. UPDATE: County Council wasted over £49k on ‘absurd’ security at County Hall

Two new Freedom of Information Act requests have revealed that East Sussex County Council (ESCC) spent £19.5k on four dates in 2022–23 ‘protecting’ County Hall from petition hand-ins, street theatre, giant newspaper headlines and mince pies. Gabriel Carlyle reports.

Santa Hats in Kings Road at 12.30 on 1 February

Friends of Pat Fisher, the visionary founder and director of Gizmo Kids are invited to wear a red hat and parade along Kings Road at 12.30 tomorrow, Thursday 1 February, to pay respects as her funeral cortege passes by. Her funeral will take place at Hastings Cemetery and Crematorium on the Ridge, at the top of Elphinstone Road.
