Hiroshima Day Commemoration 2024

Tuesday 6 August will see the annual Hiroshima Day commemoration in Hastings. It will be exactly 40 years since the occasion was first marked in Hastings by the local CND group. More recently the event has been held by Hastings Against War, which is now also known as XR Peace, having joined forces with the local Extinction Rebellion group. John Enefer writes.

UnFold at HAF: a place for creativity and friendship

This August, a group of local artists from the textile group unFOLD, will present the culmination of two years’ work. Initially inspired by their individual and diverse experiences of lockdown, the loss of their founder member Christine Chester from cancer in June 2023, brought a new meaning to this work as a reminder of the power of creativity to heal and unite in the face of adversity. Erica Smith looks forward to the show opening next week at Hastings Arts Forum.

Remember the 1945 US Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Tuesday 6 August marks 79 years since the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, and 40 years since this act of gross destruction was first commemorated in Hastings. Erica Smith reminds us of what happened in 1945 and why it’s important to stop more weapons of mass destruction being used against innocent people.

Stop selling social housing

Protesters tried to prevent Southern Housing selling off a 4-bed family home at auction in Hastings on Thursday 25 July. Campaigner Grace Lally asks why is Southern Housing Group – a housing association that is meant to provide secure social homes – selling properties to cash buyers when we have over 1000 homeless people in temporary accommodation?

Hastings will have no Pride this August

On the same weekend as a mighty successful TransPride festival was celebrated in Hastings, and Queer on the Pier was held on Saturday night, the organisers of Hastings Pride released a statement saying that there would be no Hastings Pride on August Bank Holiday weekend. One of the Pride Directors, Anton Burton Windsor, shares his statement below:
