Meeting for Southern Housing tenants
Residents and campaigners are holding a meeting in Hastings to push for action from one of the biggest housing associations in the region: Southern Housing (formerly Optivo). Gabriel Carlyle reports.
The open meeting for Southern Housing tenants will be taking place 2 – 3.30pm, Saturday 10 February at the Woody Wood Garden, Parsons Close, TN38 9GT.
Snacks and hot drinks will be provided, and there will also be shelter available in case of rain.
A flier for the event notes: ‘Our homes are making us sick and stressed … If Southern Housing upgraded our homes – starting with proper repairs and insulation – it would reduce energy bills … there are even grants available for improvements such as solar panels because it would also benefit the environment.’
Local campaigners from Unite Community, Housing Rebellion and the soon-to-be-launched ACORN Hastings group will be at the event to provide advice. And Energise Sussex Coast will be there to provide information on energy saving options.
A Facebook post on the Housing Rebellion Facebook page notes: ‘Social landlords should be at the forefront of making the transition to sustainable energy in their housing but instead they are often leaving people with mould, damp and high energy bills. Hopefully tenants can use their power as rent-payers to create the change we all want to see!’
