Nick Saloman – aka the Bevis Frond – is one of Hastings’ most globally renowned musicians, widely acclaimed as “the godfather of grunge” and recently sharing the stage at a sold out Chalk Farm Roundhouse with Courtney Love and Frond superfan Evan Dando of The Lemonheads. Ben Thompson interviews him about the many strands to his life, and the imminent release by his latest band, The Mundaynes.
Hastings Fat Tuesday Music Festival will once again deliver five days of music, mayhem and Mardi Gras across Hastings and St Leonards from Friday 17 to Tuesday 21 February. The five day town wide celebration will present over 350 free gigs, gatherings, parties and parades alongside ticketed events, with internationally acclaimed artists from across the globe appearing alongside a wealth of local bands. On Wednesday 11 January, ambulance workers took industrial action for the second time with a 24-hour strike starting at midnight. This Wednesday and Thursday, local nurses who are members of the Royal College of Nursing will make history by striking for the first time. Erica Smith keeps up to date with upcoming actions and events.
In January and early February it is traditional to sing and dance around apple trees, bless them with cider and make lots of noise to scare away evil spirits. This is meant to ensure a bumper harvest of apples in the autumn – or maybe it’s just another excuse to have some fun and keep warm on the cold winter nights. HOT’s Erica Smith gets to grips with the realities and myths of Morris dancing – with bells on!
The coveted Christmas No 1 slot went to Hastings Borough Council (HBC) this Christmas, for their website. The arbitrator was something called the Sitemorse UK Local Government Index. According to Sitemorse, HBC had a ‘near-perfect overall score of 9.6/10 for digital compliance and user experience’. Long frustrated by the Council website’s user-hostile ways, Chris Hurrell takes a closer look at what’s being assessed.

The story of Covid-19 is currently one of the continual emergence of new sub variants within the Omicron family, of which the latest is the highly transmissible XBB.1.5, which looks set to drive an increase in infections. Flu has also made a come-back this winter. As hospitals in East Sussex and elsewhere resorted to emergency measures to cope with winter demand, the government has released emergency funds to tackle the chronic problem of bed-blocking.
