Levelling up: Rother wins a grant while Hastings prepares to bid

Questions ESCC needs to answer about Queensway Gateway project

Sea Change Sussex’s Queensway Gateway Road project is not due to come up at the South East Local Enterprise Partnership’s accountability board until March, but important questions have arisen for ESCC as to who is responsible for completing it and for paying for it. The council refuses to comment. Meanwhile another director has resigned from the Sea Change board. Nick Terdre reports.

Why we must defend the Human Rights Act

Does the UK need its own Bill of Rights to replace the Human Rights Act which enacts the measures of the European Convention of Human Rights? As the bill awaits its second reading in the Commons, Pal Luthra of the Amnesty International Hastings & Rye team examines the roots of existing human rights legislation in Europe and the UK and the likely effects of the proposed new bill.

Hastings Contemporary celebrates its 10th anniversary with three exhibitions

Hastings Contemporary is celebrating its 10th anniversary which is indeed something to celebrate in the ups and downs they have experienced – as well as the economic climate. They have hosted many exhibitions over that time, some more popular than others, but that is understandable for contemporary art – there’s a clue in the word ‘contemporary’. If you stretch yourself into areas of challenging art, some work will resonate, and other, not so much. For their 10th year they have mounted three exhibitions, HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along to view them.

Stephanie Fawbert takes a walk on the wild side

Walking into the subdued lighting at the BlackShed Gallery you enter another world – Stephanie’s Fawbert’s In the Wild Wood. This is a place of fairy stories, stories and memories. Although it is a little way out of Hastings  and it was a wet morning, HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along  to  the gallery on the edge of the woods near Robertsbridge.

Striking for a safer NHS

Nurses and supporters gathered on the roadside opposite the Conquest Hospital from 8am on this very cold and frosty Wednesday morning. Erica Smith made her way up to The Ridge to find out what was driving Royal College of Nurses’ members to strike for the first time in history.
