Peace News: ‘right to protest’ celebration

On 18 June at 2pm, Peace News will be celebrating via Zoom the first anniversary of the groundbreaking Ziegler ‘right to protest’ decision by the Supreme Court with the four anti-arms campaigners at the heart of the case – Nora Ziegler, Jo Frew, Henrietta Cullinan and Chris Cole – and their solicitor, Raj Chada. HOT’s Zelly Restorick feels the right to protest is vital and invites you to join the celebration.

Goat Ledge does Gaza

The seafront cafe, Goat Ledge is to host a cultural event celebrating the developing link between Hastings and St Leonards and the small Palestinian coastal town of Al-Mawasi in Gaza. In collaboration with Hastings Friends of Al Mawasi, the event will be held on Thursday 30 June. Nic Carter writes.

Godot: was it worth the wait?

After a long patient wait by performers, director and their audiences due to the effects of lockdown on the theatrical world, Waiting for Godot finally arrives at the Stables Theatre. And to much acclaim and laughter. Godot – typically – doesn’t turn up, but the actors give a sterling performance, combining vaudeville, physical theatre and brilliant comedic timing. You still have a chance to book tickets, with performances every night until Saturday. HOT’s Zelly Restorick and Stevie Stone report, after attending the opening night in Hastings. Cox comments on transphobia claims

Serious allegations of transphobia were levelled last year against then Cllr Ruby Cox by Cllr Claire Carr, who was recently found to have breached the council’s Code of Conduct in the matter. Cox, now no longer a councillor, here responds to those allegations and explains why she did not speak out at the time.

Local man awarded RVS Platinum Champion honour

Andy Dinsdale, founder of Strandliners based in East Sussex, has been awarded a Platinum Champions honour by the Royal Voluntary Service, due to his outstanding commitment to volunteering and service to the community. Only 70 Platinum Champions were chosen in each of the seven categories. Beverley Coombes writes.
