Spruce Monkscyth and M’lie Dee
‘Mind Your Head’ live art cabaret seaside special
We can never moan that “there’s nothing going on” in Hastings and St Leonards-on-Sea — and here’s something fabulous to capture our senses: Zuzushii Art Laboratory’s “Mind Your Head’ live-art-cabaret seaside special and Sea Creatures exhibition is coming to town — plus a collective beach ritual. HOT’s Zelly Restorick asks performer, artiste and film-maker Caroline Gregory some questions to find out more about what will be happening on the day (25 June).

How did ‘Mind Your Head’ start?
Born in the basement of Caribbean pub ‘The Golden Anchor’ in south-east London, ‘Mind Your Head’ provides opportunities for artists and musicians to develop new live works. Our 5th Mind Your Head – our seaside special in Hastings – is a very special collaboration with Zuzushii Art Laboratory.
Tell us more about the evening and what’s planned
This live art cabaret will be hosted by ’70s/’80s entertainer, Spruce Monkscyth (Calum F Kerr) & the incomparable M’lie Dee (that’s me, Caroline Gregory!).
The event is principally a space for artists to try out new material in front of their peers and all are welcome. Quite special in that sense.
There will be ten live acts, 4 short film screenings – by Sparkes & Thompson, Paola de Ramos, Caroline Gregory, Tim Can & Fumico Azuma – and a magic lantern show by Nicole Mollett.
I – as M’lie Dee – will be hosting fun and games at the beginning with ritualistic headdress making. Our very special guest land artist, Venetia Nevill, will be leading a playful collective mandala ritual in honour of the Summer Solstice on the beach from 7.30 pm.
Kamura Obscura from a Mind Your Head event
We ask for a donation on the door and that’s up to the audience. We then share what we get amongst the performers at the end of the night, some of whom are travelling down from London specially. All that we are doing is unpaid. Many artists have reported that their experiences of performing at ‘Mind Your Head’ have really moved their practice forwards. We are extremely proud of this.
