An evening in with Sylvia Jiang, piano concerto competition prizewinner, online

It is no surprise that Hastings International Piano (HIP)’s An Evening In with… concert series has been a success. Innovative culture is always welcome – and now more so than ever with theatres and cinemas closed due to  Covid-19. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths is pleased that the series continues this Friday, 24 April, with Sylvia Jiang, a prizewinner at the 2019 Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition.

Care homes in the spotlight: PPE lacking and death toll under-reported

Nearly four weeks after the UK entered into lockdown, care homes have finally hit the headlines, as issues such as the lack of personal protective equipment for staff and the substantial under-reporting of deaths among residents come to the fore. In Hastings grassroots suppliers are helping to fill the equipment gap, while East Sussex County Council is also taking action to improve the supply of PPE. Care sector sources are talking of fatalities in the thousands. Nick Terdre reports.

Coronavirus statistical update: Bame population more likely to become seriously ill

As the coronavirus works its way towards peak effect, HOT is providing a regular update of the statistics for our region and the country provided by the public health authorities and other official sources. Key coronavirus message from the council

Hastings Borough Council has a leading role to play in combating the coronavirus, passing on advice from the government, liaising with local support groups and as a key point of contact in the community hub. Deputy leader Colin Fitzgerald provides an update on actions taken and urges everyone to keep following government advice. 

Community rallies to tackle PPE shortages but  inadequate supplies elsewhere criticised

PPE shortages in Hastings surgeries have prompted an encouraging community response. Although the county’s healthcare trust says supplies in the key hospitals are adequate, healthcare workers’ representatives have criticised shortages elsewhere. Nick Terdre reports.
