On Saturday 11 July, Extinction Rebellion Hastings and St Leonards (XRHSL) temporarily installed 1,200 pairs of children’s shoes on Hastings Pier, in a performance installation entitled GONE. Erica Smith went to witness the fleeting installation.
Ever since HOT’s statistical reports on the coronavirus began, it has been clear that Hastings has been relatively little affected, both in number of cases and deaths. The annual ATownExploresABook (ATEAB) festival in St Leonards-on-Sea is an exciting exploration of a heritage book by everyone in the community – including visitors. It’s also the biggest platform for young people’s outdoor art in the region – which you can see on the platform at Southeastern’s Warrior Square station where the local Transition Town community group have created a beautiful garden.
Hastings took an important step towards reopening on Saturday as step three of the government’s relaxation of lockdown restrictions came into effect. The council issued a cautious welcome but was pleased to see the West Hill Lift back in operation. New support measures for local businesses were announced by the government today.
