Co-operatives up and down the country are coming together in two weeks of unity during national Co-op Fortnight (24 June to 7 July). Local co-ops in Hastings and St Leonards – Trinity Wholefoods, Energise Sussex Coast, Walden Pond and Wave – are joining a nationwide drive to bring people and communities together by holding a drop-in afternoon. In July 2018, Erica Smith and Nick Terdre wrote for HOT about the consultation for deciding on future Marine Conservation Zone designations. The designation in question, named Beachy Head East, has now been confirmed as of 31 May 2019. The area stretches from Eastbourne to Hastings Pier, going out into the Channel just beyond the Sovereign lighthouse – an excellent local spot for divers. Anton Hack of Biodiversity Hastings writes.
Residents who burn wood or other solid fuels to heat their homes will be encouraged to cut down their use or switch to less polluting alternatives under a project running across Sussex. A message delivered on behalf of Sussex Air.
In an event jointly organised with Hastings and Rye Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Hastings’ Mosque in Mercatoria invites all members of the community to join them this Sunday, 16 June, to commemorate Al Nakba, when Palestinians were expelled or fled their homes. Local Lift the Ban campaigners will be participating in a nationwide day of action on Saturday to call on the government to give asylum-seekers the right to work. There will be stalls in Hastings and St Leonards during the day and an evening event, One Hastings, Many Voices, to encourage public support. Nick Terdre reports.

The Information Commissioner’s Office has upheld a complaint concerning the time taken by Hastings Borough Council to respond to Freedom of Information requests and directed it to review its procedures. Data supplied by the council shows a worsening trend in response times. Nick Terdre reports.
The council has made a commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. What next? asks Julia Hilton from Hastings Green Party. Back in February – thanks in part to pressure from the local Green Party and their open letter calling on the council to declare a climate emergency – Hastings Council committed to making our town carbon neutral by 2030. The council has since appointed Maya Evans as ‘climate champion’ with responsibility for climate change, biodiversity and sustainable development. It has, however, allocated no money or resources to the task.
