Mwana, Miracle of Dawn, is an exhibition by Hastings photographer Georgie Scott which documents the immense tragedy of mothers dying in childbirth or labour and the high rates of child mortality in developing countries. Part of the PhotoHastings festival, the exhibition is on display at the Hastings Trust building, 34 Robertson Street, Hastings, from 18 October until 1 November. Georgie Scott spoke to John Cole about her work.
Local painter, crest-of-the-waves photographer and filmmaker, Nick Snelling, is exhibiting at The BlackShed Gallery, evolving his relationship with the sea, his camera and his paints and pallette. HOT’s Zelly Restorick asked him some questions about his inspiration.
The exhibition, Postcards From Robert’s, which has been curated by Professor Val Williams as part of the PARC ARCHIVE-MANIA season 2014-15, opens tonight at the UAL London College of Communication. It is a partnership exhibition between PhotoHastings 2014 and the Photography and the Archive Research Centre (PARC) at UAL, London College of Communication.
In case you hadn’t noticed, Hastings is currently saturated with photographic images. From John Cole’s tarpaulin-sized portraits of fishermen hung around the Stade, the ‘Edge’ group show along the footbridge at Hastings station, all the way to Dan Bass’s trestle mounted prints next to St Leonards station, the town is awash with established and developing photographers.
