Best garden centres and nurseries near Hastings

Hastings Online Times is pleased to welcome another occasional blog – Stephanie Gaunt, aka Battleaxe, visits many garden centres and nurseries at this time of year – we have some very nice local places – these are some of her favourites.

Hastings choir sings of ‘looters and bandits’

Hastings Philharmonic Choir has an unusual treat in its next concert, ‘American Journey’, on Saturday 22 June.  It goes back to the musical roots of its great new musical director, Márcio Da Silva, with a varied Brazilian and North American song book. Márcio, who grew up in Brazil and later lived in Phoenix, Arizona, and sang with the famous Phoenix Boys Choir, has chosen some crackers from samba to spirituals. Among the songs is one about the notorious bandit Lampião, writes Chris Cormack.

Frozen out at Fairlight Hall

The thing about summer in the UK is that we’ve all got this idealised picture of balmy afternoons and evenings, strawberries and cream, cricket matches in the heat etc. – whereas the truth is very different.  People moan about climate change but I have distinct recollections of watching opera in country house venues years ago with the rain lashing down on the marquee – even one occasion at Glyndebourne when everyone was picnicking on the covered walkways like stranded refugees in dinner jackets, writes Antony Mair.

Plastic Free July 2013

In the past, I would say I have been a pretty eco-conscious sort, or more precisely, waste-conscious. Like lots of people I know, I give some thought about how a product and its packaging is made before I buy it, thoughts like “where has it come from”, and “where is it headed after I’m done with it?” HOT reporter Rebecca Snotflower reflects on the over-use and environmental hazards of plastic, and how these might be addressed.
