Love Architecture – Love Hastings!

As part of Love Architecture Week, the Jerwood Gallery are running an architecture ‘Grand Tour’ of Hastings and St Leonards on Saturday 29 June. This comes just when Jerwood Gallery has received a 2013 National Award by the Royal Institute of British Architects and  the whole town, Hastings, became one of the three towns shortlisted for the ‘Great Town’ section of the Academy of Urbanism 2014 Urbanism awards, putting it on par with Buxton and Cork. Time to open our eyes to the architectural heritage of Hastings, writes HOT’s Chris Cormack.

In making its awards, the Academy of Urbanism states that it is: “looking for quality places that work well and encourage a high quality of life – old or new, large or small, known or unknown”. When judging, it looks for places that perform well in the following areas: governance, character and distinctiveness, user-friendliness, commercial success and viability, environmental, social sustainability and functionality. This year’s winners will be announced at an Awards Ceremony taking place in London on 8 November 2013.

Antony Mair  writes: “Letters still appear in the local paper lamenting the disappearance of the old coach park, but as a regeneration project the Jerwood has been a quiet success. The building itself is beautiful, though arguably a tad neo-brutalist. The exterior is clad in black ceramic tiles, which succeed in being contemporary as well as blending in with the black clapboard of the fishing huts next door.  Inside there is a sequence of light and airy spaces, with two galleries on the ground floor being devoted to temporary exhibitions.”

The only other building in the south east to win a Royal Institute of British Architects’ award alongside the Jerwood, was a music building at the University of Kent, designed by Tim Ronalds Architects, who also designed Stade Hall, eat@The Stade and the Stade Open Space for Hastings Borough Council.

Council leader Jeremy Birch said:
“This is excellent news for Hastings, especially as we await the decision on the UK City of Culture 2017 shortlist. We pride ourselves on the town’s appearance, and take a very hard line on our ‘grotbusting’ approach to untidy and derelict buildings.

“These awards show that it’s not just about our existing buildings, but about investing for the future. To have a national award winner here in Hastings is a fantastic achievement, and I pay tribute to the Jerwood Foundation and HAT Projects, their architects. And I want to congratulate Tim Ronalds Architects, who designed our own buildings on the Stade, on their national award too.”

Burton St Leonards

Burton St Leonards

The Jerwood organised architectural Grand Tour meets on the St Leonards sea front, opposite the Royal Victoria Hotel, the tour will explore the scheme for a new seaside resort as designed by James Burton and his son Decimus. It will then pass by Marine Court, with its clear references to the Cunard White-Star Line, Queen Mary. The Grand Tour will then progress past the structures of Sydney Little, nicknamed “The Concrete King”, and stop for a snack lunch on the terrace of the White Rock Hotel, next to the White Rock Theatre, opened by the Prince of Wales in 1927. The afternoon tour will continue past The Palace Court Hotel and Claremont, stopping at Pelham Crescent to go into St Mary in the Castle. It concludes with tea and cake at the gallery cafe and a guided walk through and around the Jerwood Gallery. Tour participants will be free to explore the Gallery afterwards.

The tour on Sat 29 June is £16 per person, including lunch at White Rock Hotel, tea at the Jerwood Gallery and gallery admission. The tour will take place from 10.30am–5.15pm. Please call 01424 728377 to book.
