3 local artists make the Royal Academy

When Helen Hunt went up to the Royal Academy for the traditional ‘Varnishing Day’, she was delighted to discover two more members of Hastings’ arts community had their work on show. HOT’s Erica Smith asked her to tell us more about her day at the RA!

Love Architecture – Love Hastings!

As part of Love Architecture Week, the Jerwood Gallery are running an architecture ‘Grand Tour’ of Hastings and St Leonards on Saturday 29 June. This comes just when Jerwood Gallery has received a 2013 National Award by the Royal Institute of British Architects and  the whole town, Hastings, became one of the three towns shortlisted for the ‘Great Town’ section of the Academy of Urbanism 2014 Urbanism awards, putting it on par with Buxton and Cork. Time to open our eyes to the architectural heritage of Hastings, writes HOT’s Chris Cormack.

In the past, I would say I have been a pretty eco-conscious sort, or more precisely, waste-conscious. Like lots of people I know, I give some thought about how a product and its packaging is made before I buy it, thoughts like “where has it come from”, and “where is it headed after I’m done with it?” HOT reporter Rebecca Snotflower reflects on the over-use and environmental hazards of plastic, and how these might be addressed.

Hastings – High-Tech Hotspot!

t is not well known that Hastings plays host to a cluster of high-tech companies in the ultra-high vacuum/photonics and optics field  and, to promote and raise awareness of this, a free exhibition and conference, Tec66, is being organised at Hastings’ spanking  new conference facility, the Sussex Exchange, on Monday 16 September 2013. HOT’s Chris Cormack reports on the jobs prospects for Hastings youth.
