The Spirit of Invention exhibition at Electro Studios celebrates John Logie Baird’s amazing inventions. It includes locally built technology from the 1960s amongside new work by artists from Hastings and London. It runs Friday 10 to Sunday 12 May. Jude Montague, who is curating the show alongside Chris Simpson, shares an updated report.

Jude Montague, who is curating the show with Royal College of Art graduate Chris Simpson, takes the opportunity to chat to some of the artists about their process.
The Spirit of Invention Festival is hotting up. Jude Montague talks to Sarah Pager a sculptor and artist who is contributing to the exhibition at Electro Studios Project Space 7- 13 May 2024 and is running a workshop for family groups and adults at Hastings Museum on Sunday 26 May 2024.
Jude Montague considers the spirit of invention in Gaza observed through the television news footage in years previous to the current escalation of the conflict. Montague was a professional archivist and researcher at ITN Source from 2006-2016.
An informal DIY festival by artists to celebrate invention in its abstract and strangest everydayness is inspired by John Logie Baird’s work to develop television. Jude Montague talks about how she gets inspired by his spirit of invention.
John Logie Baird was inventing ‘seeing by wireless’ or television here in Hastings 100 years ago. In 1923 and 1924 he was living on the south coast and developing experiments, with some success, here in the town. Jude Montague writes about plans for 2024 to be collectively inspired by his spirit of invention.
The current exhibition in the upstairs gallery of Hastings Museum is an extraordinary exploration of a local inventor by two contemporary polymath artists – Jude Montague and Geraldine Swayne. Erica Smith is delighted that this gem of an exhibition has had a stay of execution and will remain on show until 20 April.
Celebrate John Logie Baird in his hometown with a weekend of special TV-focused screenings and events, including guest Q&As and a children’s puppet workshop at the Electric Palace cinema in Hastings Old Town. See some small screen gems on the big screen from 19-22 September, says Annie Waite.
