Nature, disconnection and depression
Depression is on the increase. Around the globe, more than a million people commit suicide every year. Is this a very human, very real and honest response to what is happening around the planet and our disconnection from the natural world on which we all rely? HOT’s Zelly Restorick writes.
So many people are suffering – mentally, emotionally – in response to what they are hearing about the world and what is happening in their own lives. Many people feel alone on a planet of billions of people: surely a fact that would make any person’s head spin? Many feel desperate about what is happening around the globe on a myriad of levels – the way some are treating the planet, each other and the other living creatures with whom we share this space.
Carlita Shaw, author of The Silent Ecocide, suggests that there is a link between our current planetary conditions and feelings of despair and depression. I wanted to share this with you, as maybe it will resonate for some of you, who will identify with what she describes.
